Virginia Off road series
Welcome to the 1st Virginia Off Road Series!
Introducing a new concept of a Race Series! The Virginia Off Road Series (VORS) includes multiple established races and disciplines. VORS will include noted Blue Ridge Outdoor Races from FredEvents and 18 Hours on the Farm Scouts Honor along with two other well known and popular Series from RunRideRace, Richmond MultiSports, and the SportsBackers. The competitions selected for VORS includes core mountain bike races with a twist of multiple discpline races from duathlons to 18 hours. This means competitors will have to focus not only on the race at hand but the entire series. Bottom line, accumulating points will involve as much strategy as having a strong race!
Competitors will have a variety of XC, Off-Road Duo, Off-Road Tri, Adventure Tri, Enduro, and Endurance races to compete in to score as many points as possible to win the top honor of the Virginia Off Road Series(VORS) Champions. . Categories will be for Team, SingleSpeed, and in overall men and women in the Expert/Pro, Sport and Beginner Categories. The Series requires you to race in one XC race before May 31, 2008 in order for you to be placed in SingleSpeed, Expert, Sport, or Beginner Categories. For the season, you must race in that class if you do a XC race. Otherwise, race all the races you want and your points accumulate to your total. While the top 15 in each category gain points throughout the series in each race, only the top 10 individuals in each earn the medallion at the end of the Series and the Top 3 will receive prizes. This mix of racing should keep all competitors on edge as no one discipline has an advantage. Good Luck!
Points will start accruing at the first Camp Hilbert race on March 9th! Race on!

Evaluate Racing....
As an athlete each of have our own goals. Some it’s fitness, some it’s to lose weight and some it’s competition. I really want everyone to question why they ride. Me it’s competition. Real competition, yeah its fun trying to drop your buddies on a ride sometimes but racing is a whole new ball game.
Or is it? Hard to say, my close friends all race. I don’t pick my friends based on there racing credentials rather I meet most of these guys prior or after an event. We all share the love of competition but that isn’t what creates that bond. It’s more of the understanding of the pain we go through to achieve finishing an event. Yes, finishing an event, racing is tough and winning isn’t all that there is to racing. Your racing against a clock, yourself and other folks you don’t know. Racing against yourself is the worst of the three; just ask anyone who races and I’ll bet they will tell you within fifteen minutes of an event in there mind all they are questioning is why they are doing such an event. It’s the pain that makes you wonder.
So does this sound intimidating yet? I think it does.
So you want to know some of the cool aspects?
There are plenty. Me it’s the goals achieved, I’ve raced events in the following disciplines since the age of fourteen: MTB Cross Country, MTB Downhill, MTB Slalom, MTB Mountain Cross, MTB-24 hour team events, MTB-Single Speed, Cyclocross, Road Time Trails, Road-Road Races, and Road Criteriums. I’m turning thirty this fall. My favorite? Probably Cross Country MTB. I dig some Single speed action also. Out of all of this I’m thinking the coolest experience has to be racing with friends on a 24 hour team.
Twenty Four hour races are intimidating just to think about racing that long. You need to evaluate the benefits though. You’re with you friends, your not required to anything more than you can. You can set-up the team so that your strongest guys do the most work and your weakest guys can do less. You can start the event, race until dark, and hangout at the campfire with your friends and wake up early and continue (You don’t have to have a racer on the course during the entire event unless you really want to win) Guys it’s just a fun event.
So this is something I want you to think about. Contact me at skip2ride@yahoo.com if you think you want to race in a 24 hour event. You might be able to talk one of your buddies into doing it while someone else in the club knows someone who will join. http://www.burn24hour.com/ is in NC and I want to see some of our members there and also the http://www.cobblestonebikes.com/18_hours_on_the_farm.htm will hopefully happen in august this year also. Check back to the blog for more info from Eddie and the Burn 24 and Ed Jones from 18 hours on the farm
